SUGGESTED TEAM PROJECTS
Project:
An ideal project for this class is a website for advertising
houses and apartments for sale for for rent. Advertisers can
enter rental or sale info online, upload descriptions, pictures,
and manage/edit these on the website through an admin interface.
A search facility on the sale/rental database lists entries for
visitors looking for housing to rent or buy. There are plenty
of examples on the Web as references for your teamwork. Online
payment for ad space is optional.
Project:
The website http://www.earthshareofohio.org/index.html
was brought to Tony's attention by Valora Renicker at
Glyphix in the VCD program. This seems like a good candidate for the
team project, but I'd like to hear what Paul's thoughts are on it. I
see possibilities to add functionality and possibly some type of site
administration. So this person can manage the site without Frontpage.
It's a non-profit company which is best for class.
Project: An interesting site-building project is to design
and build a site for charity. A business school professor at Kent will be the principal for the site and will provide contents, requirements,
and materials for the stie. See this text
document for more information. This site is a highly recommended project.
Please feel free to send email to Prof. Kevin Dow and arrange a meeting
with him to discuss this project.
Project: An interesting site-building project is to design
and implement a site for the WDP course sequence (I, II, and Studio).
For this project, the WDP-I and WDP-II sites can be used
as a guide. The WDP site will have an entry page that directs
the visitor to three sub-sites: WDP-I, WDP-II, and WDP-Studio.
The three sub-sites will conform to an overall design scheme while
having their own unique flavor. It
is possible for two teams to cooperate on this project.
Features of the WDP site include:
Site administrative interface.
Lecture notes upload and management.
Team and team member information automation.
Course schedule automation.
Showcase for course highlights: xhtml, css, javascript and dhtml for WDP-I, PHP, database, session control, audio/video for WDP-II,
xml, svg, SSL, advanced multimedia intergration for WDP-studio.
One team from the Fall 2003 WDP-II class took on this project with
these partial results. Use these to log in to the site:

Project: Work on the
http://www.farwestmedia.com/ site.
Work include creating a logo to adding
interactivity within the site. Contact: tsamangy@adelphia.net
Project:
The Materials Digital Library (MatDL) is part of the National Science
Foundation's National Science Digital Library Program and is a
collaborative effort involving Kent State University, the Materials
Science and Engineering Laboratory of the National Institute of
Standards and Technology, the Materials Science and Engineering
Departments at MIT and the University of Michigan. The objectives of
MatDL is to aid researchers, engineers and students by providing
immediate, reliable and ongoing access to high-quality computational
materials science information.
We are looking for a talented and creative Visual Communications senior
or graduate student to create unique and compelling user-centered
designs. Working under the supervision of the MatDL Technology Manager,
the senior or graduate student will work both independently and in
collaboration with others in the NSF MatDL project to design a dynamic
and optimized website for MatDL.

Project: Redesign and reimplementation of SymbolicNet.org.
This is a major site for the research area of Symbolic Mathematical
Computation. The site has one mirror in France and two in China.
Major work involves xhtml compliance, better page generation by PHP and
by database support, design and implementaiton of site admin interface,
and new services such as a database of links to research papers (user
updatable and searchable), a form to collect paper reference listings, etc.
Contact Paul Wang for more info.
Project: Work on the WDP-Studio site by following the
current WDP-I and WDP-II sites as models. But the site design
will be more sophisticated, more exciting, and includes more advanced
programming features and uses audio and video to enhance the site
function.
Project: Work on the ESL (English as a Second Language), Kent State University site. Continue work done by team in WDP-I or
redo project completely using techniques in WDP-II.
Project: Work on School of Visual Communication Design site.
Contact the Sanda Katila for more details.
Project: Another good opportunity is to redesign,
update and upgrade an existing website
www.hamburg.mi.us
which was initially designed and constructed for Hamburg
Township, MI. by the Spring 2001 class. See the original project description for historical interest.
